THERE has accumulated considerable evidence that, during aging, the physiological mechanisms that operate to control food intake and body weight in young individuals are diminished (1)(2)(3). This can lead to anorexia and deficient nutrient intakes and body weight loss, which can in turn impair the health of the individual (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Hence, given that physiological processes are impaired, it is important to explore alternative, nonphysiological, methods to facilitate nutrient intakes in the elderly to prevent or treat age-induced anorexia.
To investigate this question, the present study reanalyzed data on the intakes of free-living individuals that we had acquired with 7-day diet diaries (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(33)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(41)(42), separating individuals into four age groups: young adults (20-34 years), middle-aged adults (35-49 years), older adults (50-64 years), and the elderly (65 years and older). Methods. To address this issue, 7-day diet diary records that had been collected from 762 paid participants were reanalyzed, separating the participants into four age groups: 20-34 years, 35-49 years, 50-64 years, and 65 years and older. Using 7-day diet diary assessments of the spontaneous intakes of free-living adults, we have demonstrated that meals eaten with other people are on average 46% larger than meals eaten alone (17) and the more people present at the meal, the more that will be eaten (18). This appears to be true across differing western cultures (19). This orderly relationship produces a significant positive correlation between the number of people present at the meal and the meal size (17)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24).
